Beach Erosion – A Serious Issue
Beach erosion
It is important to note that beach erosion affects not only the aesthetics of an area but also its economy. Many communities rely heavily on tourism and if their beaches no longer provide the necessary attractions to draw people in, then local businesses could suffer greatly as well.
In the past, efforts have been made by local communities to reduce the damage done by beach erosion. Stabilized dunes have been built along sections of coastline, acting as a barrier between incoming waves and slowing down the process of beach erosion somewhat. Unfortunately though these solutions often require large amounts of money which some areas may not be able to afford.
In addition to building dunes, other strategies such as beach nourishment may be used but again these methods can be very costly so they are only really deemed viable when less expensive options have failed or are simply unavailable. Beach nourishment involves replacing eroded sand with new sand from offshore sources in order to build up damaged shorelines however it too is vulnerable to storms and flooding meaning its effects are rarely seen for long periods of time.
Overall then it’s clear that Southwest Florida’s coastal beaches face constant challenges related to beach erosion and while there are certain methods available for mitigating this issue none guarantee permanent protection from continuing damage caused by increasingly powerful storms and unpredictable weather patterns due to climate change.
